Reading at 4am

Don’t you hate it when you wake up in the middle of the night and can’t get back to sleep after? I was rudely awoken by a painful leg cramp at about 4 this morning and tossed and turned and tossed and turned, not helped by a stuffy nose. And eventually gave up and turned on my trusty nightstand companion, my iPad. The Stanza app has a brilliant ‘night mode’, setting the background as black and words as white, and makes for better reading in the dark. I managed to get through quite a few pages of Elizabeth Gaskell’s Wives and Daughters before my eyes got tired and I knew that the night reading had done the trick. Although I was now at a point where I just had to know… what’s up with Mr Preston? But the next thing I knew, the alarm was ringing and it was 630, time for a quick wash-up, a quick bite (I have a little bit to eat and then eat some more later in the morning), and dropping the husband off at the Bart station (he has a 45-minute train ride into the city).

I’ll get back to Mr Preston later today. There’s no better thing to do on a rainy day than read (ok, I might need a nap too). But first, some work needs to be attempted!
