It’s Monday! What are you reading? (April 15 2013)

itsmonday“It’s Monday! What are you reading?” is a weekly event hosted by Sheila at Bookjourney to share with others what we’ve read the past week and planning to read next.

We had a busy weekend! My mum was off to Austin, Texas on Saturday to visit an old friend for a week, we drove into San Francisco on Saturday evening for a dinner party at the husband’s boss’ house (wee reader was entertained by a big box of toy cars lent by the boss’ 8-year-old),  the husband’s friend was in town for work and dropped by to spend Sunday with us (and some outlet shopping – while Singapore is supposedly a shopping paradise, there aren’t any outlets, although I hear that’s about to change). And so last night I fell soundly asleep just after 10…

Currently reading:
Murder in Mesopotamia – Agatha Christie
I tried to read this last night but was too sleepy to really get into it. Will try again later.

The Eye in the Door – Pat Barker
Definitely still enjoying this one.

Dreaming in Hindi: Coming Awake in Another Language – Katherine Russell Rich
I’m enjoying the author’s experience in India, and the interspersed research about bilingualism.

The Republic of Love – Carol Shields
Oh I’m just savouring Shields’ writing. And I’m taking my time with this book – perhaps too much time as I keep dipping into all those library books with impending due dates looming over me.

Have Mother, Will Travel – Mia and Claire Fontaine
Ok have to finish this book soon!!

What I finished reading last week:

The elephant’s journey – Jose Saramago
An interesting story about Solomon the elephant (and his mahout Subhro) who journeyed from Lisbon to Vienna in 1551. It was great to read Saramago again – with all his wandering, lack of capitalization and quotation marks, and lovely writing.

What was lost – Catherine O’Flynn
Review to come

Robinson Crusoe – Daniel Defoe

Sabine’s Notebook – Nick Bantock
The journey continues and it gets a little bit too odd as Griffin travels the world and Sabine waits for him in his London flat, all the time trading letters and postcards.

Heidegger’s glasses – Thaisa Frank
I had forgotten that this book was due and had to speed-read the last third of it. And to be honest, it wasn’t really a book for me.

Tithe (Modern Faerie Tales #1) – Holly Black
I’m not quite sure what I think of this book yet.
What I reviewed last week:
Funny in Farsi – Firoozeh Dumas
Late for Tea at the Deer Palace – Tamara Chalabi

The year of Pleasures – Elizabeth Berg
