It’s Monday! What are you reading? (June 10 2013)

itsmonday“It’s Monday! What are you reading?” is a weekly event hosted by Sheila at Bookjourney to share with others what we’ve read the past week and planning to read next.

Typing this on my phone while the baby naps propped up on a pillow on my lap. He’s making cute grunting noises as he stretches out his 6-week-old arms. I love to watch as he dozes off, eyelids fluttering, a little smile emerging and sometimes even a chuckle.

Breasts: A natural and unnatural history – Florence Williams

Shock and horror! Reading about endocrine disrupting chemicals, estrogenic compound in plastics etc has me a little worried.

MWF Seeking BFF: My yearlong search for a new best friend – Rachel Bertsche

A book about a woman’s search for a new best friend. Strangely absorbing.

Outlander – Diane
Wanted to see what the fuss is about. It’s ok so far.

My life in France – Julia Child
More non-fiction. I’ve only just started so I can’t say much yet.

Looking forward to….

This one goes out to JoV
Sago gula melaka. Gula melaka is palm sugar and sago is a kind is starch I believe from the sago palm? These little pearls are tasteless but combined with coconut cream and sweet syrupy gula melaka, it makes for a wonderful cold dessert!

Cooler weather this week! We were up in Livermore on Saturday when it hit 38c. Oof. This morning though is cloudy and there has actually been thunder (very very rare in this part of the world!).

Spending time with my mum. She’ll be flying back to Singapore in two weeks!! 😦
My in-laws will be taking their turn with the kids and I’m glad for any help I can get but I will so very much miss my mum! And wee reader has grown so attached to her, I’m afraid his heart will be rather squashed when he has to say goodbye.

Read last week:

Girls in white dresses – Jennifer Close
Review to come

Dragonflight – Ann McCaffrey
The first book in the Pern series. My first ever McCaffrey. Dragons! Time travel! Weird but enchanting. Will see how the next book goes.

Shades of milk and honey – Mary Robinette Kowal
Loved this combination of Jane Austenesque and magic (called glamour). It’s part of a series so I’ve put a hold on the next book at the library.

Reviewed last week

The space between us – Thrity Umrigar
