It’s Monday! What are you reading? (January 13 2014)

itsmonday“It’s Monday! What are you reading?” is a weekly event hosted by Sheila at Bookjourney to share with others what we’ve read the past week and planning to read next.

It’s 643 am on Monday and the house is quiet except for the clicking of my keys on the laptop. The husband’s just gone off to the train station to catch the train to the city (San Francisco) and the kids are asleep. It was a rough night. The baby went to bed before 8, woke at nearly 11 after a loud noise outside and took ages to put back to sleep (I had been in dreamland by then so it took me longer than usual to get to him!). The almost 3yo woke around 1 something crying (it’s something he does rarely but on Sunday we sent the in-laws off home to Singapore, and he misses them), but was easy to put back to sleep. And the baby decided that 530 would be an ideal time to wake up again (luckily after a feed he went back to sleep easily enough!). Then the husband’s alarm went off at 555 and since I was up already, I made breakfast (i.e. toast and tea) and waved him off.

So that’s been my day so far. How’s yours?

Currently(-ish…)

Reading:

oceanlane

The Ocean at the end of the lane – Neil Gaiman
Just started. It’s been a while since I’ve read Gaiman’s fiction.

expertmurder

An expert in murder (Josephine Tey #1) – Nicola Upson
Or rather I was reading this, but the e-book loan had just expired and the book disappeared back into the invisible e-book library and I have had to place a hold on it. Sigh. Just when I was getting close to finding out whodunnit.

howtobewoman

How to be a woman – Caitlin Moran
I started reading this in April last year. I packed it in my hospital bag when I was due to give birth, read a bit when in labour (haha! thank goodness I didn’t actually get to her chapter on giving birth. Shudder!), and then never picked it up again. So here I am, trying to finish it before it takes me a year to do so!

librarybook

The Library Book – Alan Bennett, Julian Barnes, Zadie Smith and more
“famous writers tell us all about how libraries are used and why they’re important”. A Very Important Book for this library lover!

Eating:

Some straight from the fridge brownies (I used Smitten Kitchen’s Classic Brownies recipe)

Drinking:

PG Tips with milk.

Watching:

The BBC’s Sherlock!

Looking forward to:

Making it through the day with just me and the littles.

Last week:

I read:

hawkeye

Hawkeye, Vol. 1: My Life as a Weapon
Bought this for the husband’s birthday last year after reading good reviews and I loved it! The Avenger superhero without any actual superhero powers. It’s smart and fun and looks great too.

timesilence

A time to keep silence – Patrick Leigh Fermor
First published in 1989, this travelogue tells of Fermor’s wanderings through Europe’s oldest monasteries

talescity

Tales of the City (Tales of the City, #1) – Armistead Maupin
A classic, in a sense. And quite delightful. I hope to read more.

What are you reading this week?

  1. I’ve been listening to The Ocean At The End of The Lane for like a month. I’m terrible with my audiobooks. But I’ve been enjoying it. I should start listening to it again.
I started Parasite by Mira Grant last night. Her writing is so engaging. I was completely wrapped up in the book.

  2. Oh, riiiight, I started that Maupin series and quite liked it (though I suspect it got better, too): I’d forgotten it somehow and now I must add it to my (seemingly endless) list of series to finish.

I was exhausted just by reading about your morning: I hope your day has settled out and perhaps afforded the opportunity for a short nap. 🙂

  3. Oh my goodness, that is a tough start to the week. I hope everyone sleeps better tonight!

Nicola Upson sounds familiar, but I can’t think of why. I’m off to see if the interwebs can jog my memory. 🙂
