It’s Monday! What are you reading? (January 20 2014)

itsmonday“It’s Monday! What are you reading?” is a weekly event hosted by Sheila at Bookjourney to share with others what we’ve read the past week and planning to read next.

After an exciting weekend of toilet-fixing (aka hardware store shopping), Costco shopping (aka sample-tasting and boot-filling-to-the-brim-ing) and general kiddy stuff (playing, running around, fussing, napping, story time), it is back to our regular programming.

Currently(-ish…)

Reading:

fallhyperion

The Fall of Hyperion (Hyperion Cantos #2) – Dan Simmons

Ugh, hate the cover. But I’m enjoying the story.

evilmask
Evil and the Mask – Fuminori Nakamura

A very dark plot: When Fumihiro Kuki is eleven years old, his father tells him: “I created you to be a cancer on the world.”

The Free – Willy Vlautin

Eating:

I made some apple-applesauce muffins for Wee Reader yesterday (using this recipe from Weelicious but since I only had one scrawny apple, I threw in some raisins instead).

Drinking:

Some apple barley tea from Lupicia, part of a Christmas gift of teas and snacks from my friend in Tokyo.

Watching:

Downton Abbey!

Looking forward to:

Last week:

I read:

abominable

The Abominable – Dan Simmons

  1. Yup…I can see how the cover for The Fall of Hyperion might leave something to be desired. It’s so fascinating to me that we make so many decisions based on the way a book looks. No pressure, cover designers!

  2. There are some beautiful covers in that crop of recent and current reads (The Free, The Abominable; I like Locke and Key and The Library Book, also) and I agree with you on that first cover. Not so hot.
