April 2016 Readathon Update Post

Happy Readathon Day everyone!

I’m going to plonking all my Readathon updates right here on this post, hopefully every few hours or so – so please check back later for more! I’ll also be on Instagram and less occasionally Twitter.

Ready, get set, go!

End of Event Survey

Which hour was most daunting for you?

I kind of took it really easy this year especially with events happening at the house so nothing was especially daunting!

Could you list a few high-interest books that you think could keep a Reader engaged for next year?

Rat Queens and all the comics!!

Do you have any suggestions for how to improve the Read-a-thon next season?

Twitter cheerleading was great thanks to Team Raven. I wished I had more time to go around Instagram and cheer on other readathoners whom I don’t already follow. Maybe next time!

What do you think worked really well in this year’s Read-a-thon?

You guys and everyone who hosted and cheered and made things work!

How many books did you read?

What were the names of the books you read?

Andre the Giant

Rat Queens Vol 2

Resistance #1

Which book did you enjoy most?

Rat Queens!

Which did you enjoy least?

How likely are you to participate in the Read-a-thon again? What role would you be likely to take next time?

Of course! It’s an addiction!

It really depends but I would like to cheer more. I know you guys are trying to figure that out right now and it’s not easy with the number of participants!
 Hour 12 update

I’m exhausted! As I mentioned ester my kids’ birthday party is today! And about an hour ago everyone left so it is quiet now in the house and after all that cleaning up i get to sit down and read. It was only a few families that we are close to but still getting food ready, making sure everyone is eating and playing and happy, chatting with people etc is tiring for an introvert like me. Luckily the kids played great together and they all helped put the toys away. Hooray!

Anyway I am on my third book (just comics so far today)!

Mid-Event Survey:
1. What are you reading right now?

Resistance Book 1 – Carla Jablonski and Leland Purvis

2. How many books have you read so far?

This is my third book

3. What book are you most looking forward to for the second half of the Read-a-thon?

Mr Splitfoot!

4. Have you had many interruptions? How did you deal with those?

Well I just hosted a birthday party for my kids at home. That lasted several hours, as well as prep beforehand and cleanup after! I just couldn’t do any reading, updating or checking my phone at that time. But that’s ok. Everyone had a good time and no one cried except for my 2yo when he fell off his chair! (He’s fine).

How did I deal with it? Well I’m trying to make up for it by reading more now!

5. What surprises you most about the Read-a-thon, so far?

Surprises? Not really but I just want to say I like what’s going on on Instagram! Lots of fun photos and updates from those readers and book bloggers and bookstagrammers I follow!

Hour 3 update

This is the first time I was actually up before the start time of 5am! And I’ve already read one comic and one short story (from Ken Liu’s excellent Paper Menagerie) and just had breakfast.

Oops meant to post this earlier but the kids were up and I made them French toast for breakfast. And then the wordpress app on my phone seems to think that this post does not exist! So no photos of my breakfast on this post for now. But you can check it out on Instagram (ps breakfast brownie)

Books read:

Andre the Giant: Life and Legend – Box Brown

I only know Andre the Giant from the Princess Bride movie and hadn’t a clue that he’s a wrestling star (from BEFORE WWE and even fought Hulk Hogan). So this was a very unusual read for me. It was funny and also sad and moving. In case you don’t know Andre the Giant he was very large (2.24m or 7 ft 4 in) due to a acromegaly, a very rare syndrome in which the body keeps producing excess growth hormones.

Hour 0 – Opening Meme

1) What fine part of the world are you reading from today?
The San Francisco Bay Area where it’s now 5am.
2) Which book in your stack are you most looking forward to?
Hard to choose… Rat Queens? Captain Marvel? All the comics????
3) Which snack are you most looking forward to?
Birthday cake! It’s a raspberry chocolate cream. Can’t wait.
4) Tell us a little something about yourself!
This is my fifth readathon! I’ve been readathon-ing since April 2014 since my younger son was one year old. And last year won my first readathon prize – a Book of the Month three-month subscription! Woot!
And the usual stuff: I’m from Singapore, live in California, am a stay-home-mum and have a serious chocolate addiction.
5) If you participated in the last read-a-thon, what’s one thing you’ll do different today? If this is your first read-a-thon, what are you most looking forward to?
Well this is going to be an unusual readathon for me as it’s also my kids’ joint birthday party! My older boy turned 5 last month, and my younger is turning 3 on Sunday so we are having some friends over for lunch and cake and a Lego free-for-all (i.e. we bought a big box of random lego and we’ll let the kids have at it!). I will be trying my very best to readathon but it may be tricky running away to hide and read when I have guests in the house!

  1. Wow! You have quite the day today – and I thought I was busy! But I am sure you’ll find/make the time. Happy reading, Sharlene! 🙂

  2. It does sound like a busy day, and the birthday cake sounds amazing! I hope you enjoy the reading time. I am an unofficial cheerleader on the sidelines today.
