It’s Monday and I’m listening to Mindy Kaling

It’s Monday! What Are You Reading? is a place to meet up and share what you have been, are and about to be reading over the week. This meme started with J Kaye’s Blog   and then was taken up by Sheila from Book Journey. Sheila then passed it on to Kathryn at the Book Date

So last week we got a letter from the school district saying that my five-year-old got into the Chinese immersion programme! Woohoo! It turns out that there were surprisingly fewer applicants this year. Last year’s waitlist was about 20-25 long? This year there are 9 on the waitlist. But still, he got in! Yay! We won the lottery!!

But this has made me realize that I haven’t the faintest clue about kindergarten in the US. I only moved here a few years ago so it’s all still foreign. In Singapore, kindergartens are private. You go to government primary schools when you’re 6-7. And we start the school year in January. You know, because that’s when the new calendar year starts. This whole starting school in end August is just so weird to me. And no school uniforms!! As a teenager I hated having to wear my uniform, but as a parent of a five-year-old who sometimes fusses about his clothes, I really want uniforms.

On Saturday, I ran my last post for the A to Z challenge. I did it! I feel rather proud of myself for having finally given it a go – and finishing it! Especially since I am not much of a fiction writer, and there were plenty of times I wondered what I had done trying to write stories about Singapore food. Anyway, I wrote a little summary post about the challenge. And you can find all my A to Z posts here.

Not so good news – the older boy somehow got some kind of infection on his lips. He has to take oral antibiotics for a week and luckily is happy to take it but his lips are very swollen and crusty! It makes it hard for him to eat. Poor thing. Hopefully it will heal soon.

Also, hello, it is May. Wait what??

Reading:

longway
The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet – Becky Chambers

SO much fun! I love this tale of a crew of wormhole builders making their way across space.

mrsplitfoot
Mr Splitfoot – Samantha Hunt
I am embarrassed to note that I have had to renew this library book because it was hidden under some other books and I had forgotten that I had it out from the library until an email popped up saying it was due back in three days. And that was last week and I still haven’t read it. I will be reading this later. By which I mean sometime later this week.

Watching:

The Husband and I have been slowly watching Star Wars. It was Episode V last night.

Listening:

whynotme

Why Not Me? – Mindy Kaling

I’ve decided that I really need to start using those credits on Scribd, mostly because my yearly membership will be up in August and I am considering if I want to continue. Anyway I really like listening to Mindy Kaling. She’s lots of fun. Also I am becoming rather fond of listening to celebrities narrate their own books. I think I may try Yes Please next. Thoughts on that one, anyone?

Eating:

I had a mozzarella sandwich for breakfast but now I really want a doughnut. Also it is 830 am on Sunday when I am typing this. I have already put sheets in the laundry and vacuumed the upstairs. It is 830 am and I already feel tired. 😛

Drinking:

I reckon that I need a Nespresso. See above.

Cooking:

Maybe another oxtail stew.

Noodles. Always noodles.

Spaghetti! Because I my kids need it.

Browsing:

16 books to look forward to in May (Lit Hub)

Loved this one: Women detectives in fact and fiction (Lit Hub)

Reading the world – book recommendations for 196 countries (via Earl Grey Editing, who also has a ton of other great links for diverse reading)

I am a chocolate lover, but not really that fond of sweet stuff, so I really want to try out all of these savoury pastries at Food52, especially since a lot of them have cheese in them.

On a non-bookish or foodish note, I have always looked on as people talk about their monthly beauty subscriptions, but have never felt like I wanted to commit to something that arrives every time, filled possibly with things I don’t always want to use. BUT! I did give the Target Beauty Box a try last month, mostly tempted by the Laneige mask that came in it, and loved it. What I like about it, besides the price and free shipping, is that it’s not a subscription, you can just buy it when you want it (of course before it gets sold out). And you can, thanks to blogs like Nouveau Cheap, get an idea of what is coming out in the next box beforehand.

Added to the TBR list:

The Name Therapist by Duana Taha (via Kerry at Pickle Me This)

Sex Coven – Jillian Tamaki (via Women Write about Comics)

Last week:

I read:

The rest of the comics I had borrowed from the library for the readathon. Disappointingly,  all written by men. But still most of them were fun to read.

Beauty – Kerascoët (Illustrations), Hubert
Nijigahara Holograph – Inio Asano, translated by Matt Thorn
Black Science Vol 1: how to fall forever – Rick Remender, Matteo Scalera (Artist), Dean White (Colorist)
Low Vol 1: The Delirium of Hope -Rick Remender, Greg Tocchini (Illustrator)
MPH – Mark Millar, Duncan Fegredo

  1. Congrats on your son getting into that school! It takes such a weight off our mom shoulders when things work out for our kids. 🙂

I can completely relate to losing a library book in my house, but I’m glad you will be reading Mr. Splitfoot. I loved it so much!

  2. Yay, congrats, it’s wonderful your son got into the program!
I listened to Kaling’s other book ok recently and enjoyed it but I think maybe celeb memoirs are not my favorite books. But I’d love to hear your thoughts on the Rhimes one if your you listen to it! Oh yes Scribd credits, I have to set myself a reminder each month to check that I won’t loose any credits.
Hope your kid feels better soon 🙂

    1. Thanks Bina!

Yeah Scribd credits. It has taken me a while to finally use them but It’s like if you don’t use it they won’t give new ones if you’ve already accumulated too many right?

      1. Yes you really have to watch those credits. You can only accumulate 9 books and 3 audiobooks. So when a before the new credits come in I always check my credits and use some up that would be lost!

      2. Yeah I’m quickly trying to check out as many audiobooks now! But I think I may cancel once my annual subscription is up in August!

  3. I’m glad you found my links post useful. Thank you for stopping by.

It sounds like the Singapore school year is rather more like the Australian school year than the US. The idea of starting the school year when the calendar year is more than half over always seemed a little strange to me. On the other hand, I’m not sure I’d want to try it in January if the roads were iced over.

I keep hearing excellent things about The Long Way to a Small Angry Planet. I think I’m going to have to add that one to my wish list.

    1. Haha no don’t worry. I have watched them many times as a kid. Well at least eps 4-6. We are just watching them together for the first time!

  4. I can’t believe it’s May already either! Before we know it, school will be starting up! I still can’t get used to school starting in August instead of September after Labor Day, but that’s how most places do it now, I guess!

    1. Yup at the moment it is K to grade 6 in this one school in our city (other cities in the area also have these prog and I think there’s even a Cantonese immersion in a SF school). And the city has just approved for the prog to continue to junior high as the first batch of immersion kids are starting junior high either this year or next. Of course w public schools it depends a lot on the parents who campaign and donate and organize fundraising for this program to work!
